Mircea Eliade (1907–1986) was a Romanian historian of religions, philosopher, and writer. He is best known for works such as The Myth of the Eternal Return, which explores cyclical time in archaic cultures, and The Sacred and the Profane. He spent much of his later career as a professor at the University of Chicago and is a foundational figure in the study of comparative religion.
