Hidden Beauty of Stones – May

A geology programme taking place on 23 May 2026 from 9 to 15. Participants will meet at a pre-arranged location (an active limestone quarry in the Moravian Karst area), where under the guidance of geologist Ing. Jiří Šafařík CSc., each person will find their own piece of limestone and shape it into a collectible stone – grinding and polishing it. The limestone for processing is sourced from a different location each time, so the programme can be repeated and each time you will obtain a different type of stone. At the beginning of the programme, participants will watch a presentation about the limestones of the Moravian Karst and an instructional video about their processing. In the quarry, the group searches for interesting pieces – fossils, quartz geodes, or stalactites. Afterwards, the group moves to the House of Nature at Skalní Mlýn, where grinding and polishing takes place. The programme also includes a visit to an interactive exhibition dedicated to the formation of limestones, caves, and other karst phenomena. The programme is suitable for children from 8 years old. Transport to the limestone collection site and to the House of Nature is your own responsibility. Prior registration is required – the number of places is limited.
