***Have you ever wished for someone to love you more than anything in the world? In the original horror film Obsession* by director Curry Baker, a man discovers that such a wish can be deadly dangerous.**
Bear (Michael Johnston) is an ordinary young man whose love for his colleague Nikki (Inde Navarrette) is as intense as his shyness and inability to ask her out. Desperate people do desperate things, so Bear buys a suspicious toy from a dubious antique shop that, according to its instructions, can grant one wish. Any wish. The young man doesn't need to think long. He wants Nikki to love him. The result comes almost instantly. Nikki is in love with Bear. Passionately and madly. So madly that it becomes dangerous, and Bear begins to mind. At first a little, then quite a lot. The more he minds, the colder his feelings toward Nikki become. But Nikki remains utterly devoted to him. And like a madwoman, she begins to act out because of this love imbalance. A frightened Bear would like to return his wish, but the shop owner where he bought the "wish tool" doesn't help much — or rather, gives him advice he didn't want to hear. The wish's spell can only be broken by death, preferably his own.
Obsession can be viewed as a pure horror film or a very dark comedy; it depends on what love experience the viewer has. Although the consequences of Nikki's excessively intense infatuation inspire dread, director Baker tried to keep her feelings on the most civilized level possible, though quite twisted. "Nikki is obsessed. It's not a demon or magic, but love. Too strong and destructive. And it forces her to do all these terrible things," says director Baker.
