The Regional Museum in Chomutov at the town hall (náměstí 1. máje 1) hosts the exhibition "Insects – Beauty and Wealth of the Czech Central Highlands" from 26 March to 13 September 2026, borrowed from the Regional Museum in Teplice, where it was held in 2023. This is the final stop of this travelling exhibition. The exhibition presents the largest and most comprehensive collection of butterflies from the Czech Central Highlands – a total of 1,985 species – supplemented by colourful and exotic butterflies from museum collections and private breeding. Visitors will see approximately 50 boxes with prepared insects from the region, as well as beetles and insectivorous animals. The author and curator of the collections is zoologist Miroslav Žemlička from the Teplice museum. In addition to insect specimens, visitors will find a special binocular magnifying glass, beekeeping suits, an educational beehive, a short video about bees for children, tactile boxes with mysterious objects, and a detective game "Insect Detectives" for families with children. The museum has prepared an educational programme for schools and a rich accompanying programme for the public: a lecture by the only forensic entomologist in the Czech Republic, Col. Ing. Hana Šuláková, Ph.D. (Insects in Forensics), lectures by Pavel Krásenský about ants and his workshop on insect photography, Insect Museum Night, Butterfly Night in Bezručovo údolí, and guided tours of the exhibition (e.g. 12 May 2026 at 5 p.m., free entry). The museum is open Tuesday–Friday 12–6 p.m., Saturday–Sunday 10 a.m.–6 p.m., closed on Mondays. Admission is all-day and includes current exhibitions in both museum buildings as well as permanent exhibitions. Children under 15, educational supervisors, and holders of ZTP and ZTP+P passes enter free.
