Demolished Houses in Our City During the Socialist Era

Thu, 9 Apr 2026 · 17:00 — Wed, 30 Dec 17:00

Muzeum fotografie a moderních obrazových médií, Jindřichův Hradec

The exhibition "Razed Jindřichův Hradec: Demolition of Houses in Our City During the Socialist Era" presents dozens of previously unpublished photographs from the collections of the State District Archive (SOA) Jindřichův Hradec, documenting building demolitions and urban transformations of the city. The exhibition was created through the efforts of experts from the State District Archive, who managed to uncover and contextualize a series of historical images processed in remarkable quality. Although the exhibition primarily captures the socialist period, the photographs also document changes from much earlier times – it fully began in 1961, when a development plan for Jindřichův Hradec was created with a outlook to 1980, within which the demolition of more than two hundred residential units was planned. The exhibition's aim is not to capture the contrast of locations before demolition and after new construction, but primarily the moment of demolition itself. On dozens of panels, comparisons of then and now are available – for example, at the Střelnice cultural house, documented continuously until 1808 through photographs, period drawings, and graphics. The panels record historical moments of Jarošovská, Štítného, and Václavská streets, Nežárecké and Jiráskova suburbs, the embankment, Novoměstské (Masarykova) Square, Husovy Gardens, and other locations. Maps marking the documented sites are also included. The opening reception took place on Thursday, April 9, 2026, at 5 p.m. The exhibition runs until December 30, 2026. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. (last entry at 4:30 p.m.). The museum is located in the historic city center in a former Renaissance Jesuit college (Kostelní 20).
