Orpheus Descending

This land is still untamed. It was wild, its people were wild, and a strange wild tenderness bound man to woman and woman to man. But now a neon plague has erupted, spreading across the earth like a neon contagion, just as it does everywhere in the world.

One American gas station. Always the same faces. Everyone knows everything about each other, everyone has managed to hurt each other somehow, everyone hates each other – or loves each other. But it amounts to the same thing. Then a random hitchhiker arrives. Just passing through. Will he take me with him? What does he want? And what do I want? Probably everything.
