Exhibition of Photos and Stories of Children in Foster Care
DKO, Jihlava
free entry
The traveling exhibition "What I See" presents the world through the eyes of eight children aged six to seventeen from children's homes who are involved in foster care. The children were given disposable cameras and decided for themselves what they wanted to capture – the panels feature shared outings as well as seemingly everyday situations, such as food on a plate, a hamster in a hand, or a flower on a table. Photographer and curator František Ortmann selected the images with the strongest narrative value and shaped the exhibition's form. The photographs are complemented by stories inspired by the real lives of children in institutional care.
The exhibition was prepared by the SPOLUŽIVOT Foundation, which was established in 2024 on the initiative of Tereza Šindlerová and connects children from children's homes with people interested in foster care. The exhibition is part of a nationwide campaign "Even a Little Has Power," which aims to reach new people interested in foster care and show that even a relatively small investment of time by an adult can provide crucial support to a child from a children's home. Foster care is a long-term and recurring contact with a child from a children's home based on volunteering – unlike adoption or foster parenting, the child does not move into a new home for daily living.
The exhibition is on display at Jihlava's DKO throughout May until June 1, 2026. Admission is free. More information at spoluzivot.cz.
