Vegetariánka (2009)
Original title: Chaesikjuuija
- Genre: Drama
- Country: South Korea
- Runtime: 111 min
After a horrific dream, Yeong-hye (Chae Min-seo) stops eating meat. Her new conviction, however, encounters resistance and incomprehension from her relatives. Later the pressure escalates into a violent episode that completely changes the lives of everyone involved. Director Lim Woo-seong skillfully adapted a contemporary literary classic by respected Korean author Han Kang. It was precisely for the story of a young woman who conducts a physical dialogue with society there that she won the prestigious International Man Booker Prize in 2016. Vegetarianism serves as a framework in which confrontation with ossified conservatism, firm family hierarchy, and patriarchy takes place. Lim Woo-seong builds on the remarkably successful semantic foundation of the book and pushes his film toward bodily and social horror.
