Brno During the Occupation
Institut Paměti národa Brno, Brno
A guided walking tour mapping events connected to the occupation of Brno in August 1968 and the subsequent normalization period.
The Prague Spring, which ended with the invasion of Warsaw Pact troops in August 1968, ranks among the most significant periods in twentieth-century Czechoslovak history. Although the main events unfolded in Prague, Brno — in the words of leading normalizer Alois Indra — did not play "second fiddle" in the entire process. The tour builds on similar trails created by the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes dedicated to the periods of Nazism and Stalinism, and will guide you through places connected to the August occupation and normalization, particularly evident in the brutal suppression of protests in August 1969.
The tour is authored by historian Michal Konečný, and Martin Koplík will guide you through the city's history. Meeting point is in the foyer of the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes, Radnická 10, 1st floor.
