Roy Strang lies in a coma. Unable to communicate with the outside world, he sinks ever deeper into himself. His dreams are as adventurous as hunting predators in Africa and as suffocating as the life of an innocent boy in the midst of the jungle of Edinburgh's suburbs. Yet through all the surreal visions, the true shape of disturbing events from his recent past emerges with increasing clarity—a past full of violence, frustration, fighting, and above all, deep guilt.

"Nightmares with the Marabou Stork," one of Irvine Welsh's lesser-known yet darkest and most complex works, poses unsettling and insidious questions through his characteristically harsh yet penetrating language. What forms can the carousel of cruelty take in a world whose primary law is the right of the stronger, where passionate brutality is the only source of intoxication, and where words like humanity or forgiveness have no place.

The marabou stork is hideous, treacherous, and monstrous—a predatory bird that feeds mainly on flamingos. It does not hesitate to devour eggs or chicks, resorting to unimaginably bestial tactics in its hunting and treatment of prey. And humans? What can be said about them?

The production contains scenes of explicit sexual violence and profanity. We do not recommend this performance for viewers under 15 years of age.
