Mother
Dům kultury, Strakonice
A theatrical production by Prague's MANA Theatre based on Karel Čapek's final dramatic work. This three-act anti-war drama remains one of the pinnacles of Czech dramatic literature — Čapek's wife, actress Olga Scheinpflugová, inspired him to write the play. The work tells the story of a mother who gradually loses her husband and sons, raising profound questions about life's values and priorities from both female and male perspectives. Directed by Peter Gábor with dramaturgy by Věra Mašková. The title role is performed by Jitka Smutná, alongside Dušan Sitek, Aleš Bílík (alt. Viktor Zavadil), Ondřej Černý (alt. Jaroslav Blažek), Leonard Stirský, Zdeněk Bařinka, and Ivan Koreček. Set and costumes by Michal Syrový. Running time: 90 minutes with a 20-minute intermission. The production premiered on 5 February 2020.
