La traviata
Národní Divadlo, Prague
Verdi's La traviata is one of the most frequently performed operas at the State Opera and remains one of the most beloved titles on the world opera stage. The opera was created based on a libretto adapted from Alexandre Dumas fils's novel "The Lady of the Camellias" about Marie Duplessis, a famous courtesan and idol of Parisian society in the 1840s. The story of the terminally ill courtesan Violetta Valéry, who renounces her love for Alfredo Germont from a respectable family and dies in poverty, has moved audiences for more than 150 years. Verdi's moving music romantically idealizes unhappy love and appeals primarily through its profound and emotional lyricism. The production was staged in 2006 by a foreign team led by French director Arnaud Bernard. The production, though seemingly black and white, stands out for the colorfulness of its characters. La traviata has been on the State Opera's repertoire since its very beginning and became an opportunity for guest performances by famous foreign singers, including the legendary Australian soprano Nellie Melba (18 April 1900). Warning: The performance contains tobacco products and nudity is depicted. Suitable for audiences aged 15 and above.
