Natural History Exhibition
Ostravské muzeum, Ostrava
The permanent exhibition "Nature and Landscape of Ostrava Region" is housed in the Ostrava Museum, located in the historic Old Town Hall building on Masaryk Square in the centre of Ostrava. The exhibition is organized by biotopes characteristic of the area – individual rooms present the agricultural landscape surrounding settlements, floodplain forests in the Odra River basin, pond systems and watercourses flowing into the Odra. An interactive biotope at the confluence of rivers was created by artist Petr Nikl. The water and wetland biotopes are followed by communities of floodplain meadows and pastures. The floodplain landscape around the Odra transitions to terraces and foothills with preserved forest stands. The final room, called urban landscape, focuses on the phenomenon of an industrial city surrounded by slag heaps and industrial areas. An audiovisual tour presents the animals, plants, insects and diverse landscape types of the Ostrava region. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 to 18 o'clock; it is closed on Mondays.
