Andrej Dúbravský – The Rest Interval
Villa Pellé, Prague
from 150 Kč · ≈ 6 €
Andrej Dúbravský (born 1987 in Nové Zámky) is one of the leading figures of contemporary Slovak painting. He lives and works in Rastislavice, Bratislava, and New York, and his works are represented in public collections, including the Slovak National Gallery. The exhibition The Rest Interval at Prague's Villa Pellé is his most comprehensive solo presentation in Prague to date and runs from May 6 to June 21, 2026. The exhibition title originates from sports terminology, where it denotes the period between phases of physical exertion during which recovery and regeneration occur. In a broader context, it is a call for rest in an environment of constant activity and sensory overload. The exhibition features dozens of often large-scale canvases – figurative painting, intimate and erotic scenes, stylized self-portraits, and nature studies. Exhibition curator Jan Christoph Breitwieser describes Dúbravský's approach as "biological expressionism": a series of paintings featuring bees, roosters, caterpillars, and other organisms that, together with human figures, create a unified whole. The project explores themes of corporeality, nature, ecology, queer identity, and metamorphosis. Tickets can be purchased in advance through GoOut or directly at the gallery box office.
