From Stephen to Henry
Kostel sv. Štěpána, Prague
An educational walking tour through historic Prague's New Town with Prague with Eyes Wide Open.
The route follows the medieval New Town artery – today's peaceful Štěpánská Street – from the Church of St. Stephen to the Church of St. Henry. The walk begins at the Church of St. Stephen, which once held an exceptional position on the land route and Prague pilgrimage trail. Participants will look inside and view paintings depicting the lives of Czech saints as well as the church's Gothic Revival renovations.
The route continues along Štěpánská Street, where points of interest include the Habich department store, the Primasů brewery, the Art Deco Hotel Acron, and the Excelsior restaurant and automat. On Wenceslas Square, the location of the statue of St. Wenceslas will be shown, followed by buildings at the intersection of Vodičkova and Jindřišská streets. Jindřišská Street features the Harrachův Palace – the interim seat of government after the founding of the Czechoslovak Republic – and the main post office building, established on the site of Central Europe's first botanical garden. The walk concludes at the second parish church of New Town, St. Henry's.
