free entry
The permanent exhibition "Through the Temple, in a Circle, on the Slope" is housed in Wortner House (U Černé věže 22, České Budějovice) and presents a selection of artworks from the Alšova South Bohemian Gallery collection. The opening took place on 25 May 2024. The exhibition curators are Dita Kozler (formerly listed as Pfefferová), Miroslav Růžička, and Hynek Látal.
The foundation of the collection consists of medieval art. The section titled "Through the Temple" is located in the first basement level, whose character and architectural elements evoke a sacred space – symbolically returning the objects to their places of origin, namely sacred buildings. Visitors will see, for example, a medieval Madonna from Rudolfov (loan from Rudolfov parish), the Adoration of the Lord from Hluboká (loan from the National Heritage Institute), a pietà from Všeměřice, and the newly restored Lamentation of Christ from Korkusova Huť.
The sections "in a Circle" and "on the Slope," by contrast, are white spaces offering a selection of modern art – particularly interwar avant-garde, post-war Czech art, postmodern tendencies of the 1990s, and contemporary works (such as paintings by Jan Zrzavý). The architectural design of the exhibition also allows for the display of works on paper – drawings and prints thus have their own dedicated space in the permanent exhibition. The exhibition is continuously evolving. Wortner House is a Gothic-Renaissance building in the centre of České Budějovice and has been a branch of the Alšova South Bohemian Gallery since 1993.
